The Spinner’s Loft is the Open Studio of artisan, Leslie Hauck. Located on Jeddore Harbour of Nova Scotia’s Eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean, visitors come for the tranquil setting and fresh sea air to see a wide range of spinning fibre samples from yak to milk weed pod silk. They will maybe try hand carding and spinning on a drop spindle. Leslie shares with interested folk the more than 30,000 year history of spinning and equipment. One could purchase a cozy dog fur scarf or homemade jam and vinegar.
Booking a how-to-spin workshop is a multi-sensual experience -- seeing, touching, hearing, smelling are all elicited through the spinning process. Added to that is tasting the delicious and healthy meals Leslie creates.
But the Spinner’s Loft is not just about learning to spin, honing your spinning skills, or creating novelty yarns out of the exotic fibres you just spun, it is also about unwinding and enjoying your surroundings. The calming, rhythmic and even meditative effects of spinning have won people over ever since spinning one’s own yarn was no longer a necessity. Complete ‘Get Away’ weekends with accommodations are available in all seasons -- cozy wood fires in the winter, ocean breezes in summer.
Leslie Hauck has been hand spinning for over 30 years, using anything that is spinnable from Sable Island horse hair to milkweed pod silk. She enjoys spinning dog fur because of it’s availability, dye-ability, novelty, warmth and softness, and beauty.
Handling fibers, working with colour, spinning and creating yarns is a passion for Leslie; so, too, is passing on that excitement through demonstrating to the public, and teaching new enthusiasts. As a life-long knitter, seamstress, and clothing designer, her love of fiber, color and textiles has been a continuous thread throughout.
